Its here.

This summer is something new for me.   For once instead of spending my time in front of my computer...I have spent it outside.   I've done lots of yard work...sat on the patio (enjoying a new mister and lots of wine) and hung out at the pool quite a bit....something I haven't done in many years.    Hopefully that excuses my lack of updates lately...but well...probably not.

After waiting for 6 months...my new SLK is finally here.   It's so very therapeutic to finally be able to put down the top again.   Well, it would be if it wasn't over a hundred degrees this week.    I swear I saw my thermometer say 109 on the way home one day this week...but that's probably just the temperature of the highway.     The new car is very much the same and yet quite different from the old car.   The new color is amazing and I am glad I went with the blue.   The premium leather is as soft as I have felt in a car (or even a bag) and the caramel color is perfect.   There are subtle differences all over the car.   The buttons are now black, the electronics package is far superior and the car feels like a much better put together machine.     There are a few disappointments such as the removal of some features for putting down the top but I have fixed most of them by installing a new smarttop chip.   Now I can raise or lower the top from a distance or even when I am driving under 30 mph.   In addition to the pics you see here..I got out last weekend and took a few pics that you can look at here.   I plan to take some more when the weather is nicer.

I will try hard to update more often.  Catch ya all later.

Still no deal
Monday, February 26, 2007

After some quick negotiations, the sales guy and I agreed on a price, now he has to find me a car.   I am picky so it's not as easy as just going out back and finding one.   He assures me he has found one that will match my specs (Silver/Ebony/Tech) and will have it this week so by the end of the week, I will probably be a sport-ute driver.

Work has been crazy busy this month, we are progressing on our first full scale DotNet conversion effort on RightAngle.   I have been working for 2 or 3 years to prepare for this conversion and it's finally going to happen.   Needless to say, this first project isn't without it's little glitches.   Every week, my task list get's longer and longer with no end in sight.   It's the kind of challenge that makes me really like this job....I guess I am a masochist or something.

The last few Friday nights, my sister has been bringing a few of her friends over to the house.   We have had a fun time, shooting some pictures, listening to some music and enjoying some wine.     Ever since she was young, she was good at meeting interesting people and this ability has stayed with her into adulthood.   It's a skill that I'm afraid I don't have in such abundance.     One of the  byproducts of chatting with Jen, Judy and Megan this Friday is that they convinced me that 1) myspace is not so bad and 2) not all myspace pages have to be a horrendous mess.   So, I spent a few minutes this weekend to actually make a myspace page.  It's at www.myspace.com/jakewpratt   I have only two friends but I am off to a start.   They say it's a great way to meet people but I am guessing that it probably involves that outgoing personality that has alluded me so far, oh well, just something else to work on in the new year :)

RDX it is
Wednesday, February 21, 2007

After pondering it for another week, I have pretty much decided that I am going to go with a Silver/Ebony RDX with the Tech package.   After driving one last weekend and playing with the voice activated systems, I am completely sold on this fancy little SUV.  Luckily, Jen insists it's a station wagon so I think I will just call it that so I don't feel like I am driving a big ole Sport Ute.      I haven't ordered one yet but I expect I will any day now.

So, lately, I have been getting much more into listening to music.   Nothing new mind you but it occurred that with the ups and downs recently, I have been using music to regulate my moods.   If I am feeling a little down, I'll just pop in something depressing like Cowboy Junkies or Fischer Downers.   Time to feel in a good mood, I just throw in a solid upbeat anthem like Shania Twain's Up!.    I never realized how much I used music this way but now that I do, it's kind of fun to create little musical lineups that take me through a range of feelings as I drive to or from work each day.    I am kind of thinking it might be time to pick up one of those old musical instruments I used to play.

Getting to know you...
Monday, February 12, 2007

Boy am I getting to know my friendly neighborhood Mercedes service people. As my SLK enters it's third year with me, it's back to it's old tricks   It's going to the dealer yet again tomorrow.   This time to fix the stuff that they didn't fix last time and maybe fix a few of the new squeaks and rattles that have cropped up.    Since the SLK's days are numbered,  I went car shopping this weekend.    As much as I love (and hate) the SLK, it just doesn't cut it when it's time to go to Lowes or Home Depot.   As much as I hate to admit it,  after driving home a few times with the passenger seat crammed with brooms and boxes,  I am forced to concede the fact  that I need something with more utility than a tiny convertible can offer.    Since the lease is up on the MB at the end of this year, I think I am going to go ahead and get a sport-ute now and replace the SLK with something fun and cheap the summer after next.   So, lately  I have been pondering what combination of vehicles will work best without going over my auto budget.   Here are the options I considered...

  • Old Honda CR-V and a new Audi TT.
  • Used Lexus RX and a Nissan 350Z.
  • Brand new CR-V and a Mini Cooper Convertible.

I liked all of these options as they meant that I would be able to have a pretty decent convertible while having the ability to get out in the snow when I needed to.   After pondering them all I think I have thrown out all of these options.   What caused it...well...a trip to the Acura dealer and sitting in the new RDX.   For the first time since the Infiniti FX I really like an SUV.   However unlike the FX, the RDX is small.  So small in fact that I don't feel like I am turning traitor by driving one.    So, I think I have decided on an 2007 Acura RDX with Tech Package.  That just leave me with a decidsion on what convertible to replace the SLK with.    You know, maybe I should get another Honda S2000, that car sure was a blast...and I get finally get back into auto crossing with it.    I have a while to decide.

Car problems....Again.
Friday, March 25, 2005

After thinking the car was finally fixed....the light came on again. GRRR!!! Back to the shop again. I am getting a little tired of taking the car in to have it taken apart and put together unfixed. Unforunately, I leased it so I don't have the same ability to simply return it as a "lemon", but there may be other options. Still love the car though. Just with it was fixed.

Got the VAIO and got it all configured to my liking. This is one cool laptop. It has with out a doubt the nicest LCD screen I have ever seen anywhere. That includes my 23 inch monitor that sits on my desk. It is almost too bright and crisp. I can't run it on it's highest brightness unless I am outside.

Battery life is so so. I can get around 2 hours while surfing the web on the couch but no more. It may get better as time goes on but we will see.

Long time no blog...
Saturday, March 12, 2005

Sorry, long time, no blog.   I had a very buzy few months.   I have been working on a new website for a business in town and between that, my real job, my PAD project and everything else, it's taking most of my time.   Lots up updates though.   So far, the SLK is great...except one small problem.   It has to go in to the shop every couple weeks.   This nagging "check engine" light keeps coming on and they dealer has had trouble trying to figure it out.   Hopefully they got it sorted out now so I can just enjoy the car.  I have taken a small pile of pics since I got the car which you can see here.   http://www.pbase.com/jakepratt/car_photos   It's really a love/hate relationship right now, but once the weather is nicer and the bugs are all worked out, I expect that will all change.

My PAD project is continuing.   I am in the final stretch of the project (9 months so far) and will probably stop at the end of a year.   I am thinking of doing a picture a week and focusing more on the quality of the ideas and technique which gets lost in the shuffle taking a picture a day.

I have a few new gadgets that I purchased lately.

First off, I upgraded my Treo to the new Treo 650.   It's a big step forward and a big step backward.   It's got bluetooth, a high resolution screen and a removable battery.   These features are great...unfortunately, they come with a few problems.   Specifically, Palm decided to try out a new file system that is nothing but trouble.   The thing is very picky about software  Lots of software can simply crash it so it resets at least once every few days.   Hopefully firmware upgrades will fix that up.    If anyone is interested in my old Treo 600 (almost perfect condition) let me know.

I also grabbed a new iPod Shuffle.   It's awesome.  It weighs nothing.  I use it so much, I may just give up on my main iPod.    Since my SLK plays MP3 natively, there really isn't a need for it anymore.

Finally, I am replacing my laptop.  For the first time, I am going to try a Sony VAIO.   I really want an Apple, but being a programmer, that's not going to work.   I figure the Sony is the closest thing you can get on the PC side.   It is a custom Sony FS-500.    I will try to post on how I like it when it comes in.

Well, that's about all that's going on.    I think it's time for a drive.  I will try to update more often if I can.

It has arrived
Thursday, December 09, 2004

The day finally arrived Saturday.   I picked up the new car.   It is a bit overwelming.   This car is much more stunning that it looks in pictures.   It looks and handles amazingly.   Picking up the car was pretty uneventful, just the typical paperwork and then a run through of the features.   I thought I had it all figured out....boy was I wrong.   This bad boy had 800 pages of owners manual which you really need to read because it is very complicated.

There were a number of surprises for me.  First the red leather is stunning.   Much better than in pictures.   I was expecting to look good, but It looks great.  The second surprise is that the car is so configurable.  This is my first German car in 9 years and wasn't expecting so much luxury and flexibility.  Everything about the car can be customized to your needs.   How long the lights stay on, how the easy entry feature works, and much more.

I had a chance to take a few pictures while driving around on Saturday, but not as many as I would have liked.   I promise I will take more soon.

There are few problems though.   First, my driveway is too steep for the front of the car.   I can very carefully get it into the garage but just barely.    So today, I had it torn out and rebuilt, once it is complete, I will have no problems with the drive.   2)  The check engine light came on at 80 miles.   Probably nothing, but I have to take it in late this week to get it checked out...oh well, I guess this is just part of owning a new high tech piece of machinery.   It's not much different from the rest of my gadgets.

Placed my Final Order
Sunday, October 10, 2004

I haven't been posting much lately because I have been posting every day at my Picture A Day Gallery  But I did put in the final order for my SLK last week so it is official and is planned to be built the first decade (1st 10 days) of November.  I expect to have it by mid December and I can't wait.   Here are the options I ordered.
  • Iridium Silver with Red Leather - My first car with Red Leather, I hope I like it.
  • Comfort Package which includes the power seats and steering wheel.
  • Lighting Package which includes high and low beam Xenon headlights.
  • Entertainment w DVD Navigation which includes the Command head unit, dvd based navigation system and the ability to play MP3 cd's
  • Heating Package which includes heated seat and Airscarf so you drive with the top down on cold days.
  • Premium Package which includes all of the fun gadgets like the Garage Door opener and Rain sensing wipers.
  • 7 Speed Automatic

and of course...

  • The AMG Sport package to give it that masculine car look.

Long time no blog.

My quest to shoot a picture a day continues and is shaping up pretty well.   I have moved it to PBase to make it easier to manage.  This photo sharing site is great and geared toward amateur photographers like my self.    Be sure to stop by and tell me what you think

I am trying to decide on what features to order on my SLK.   I have to make up my mind by September so I have some time.    So far, this is what I think I am going to get.

  • Silver Exterior/Black Interior.
  • Heating Package (AirScarf and Heated Seats)
  • Premium Package (Rain Sensing Wipers, Remote Roof Control )
  • Comfort Package (Power Seats and Steering Wheel with memory)
  • Entertainment without Navigation (This gets me the Command System but with out the mapping which I don't use often in my G35)
  • Bi-Xenons (Can't drive a car with out Xenons once you have them once.)

The only thing I am struggling with is the AMG package.    It is pretty expensive (3000+) but it really changes the looks of the car for the better.   Here is a pic with the AMG to compare it with the other pics

That was easy....I decided on
Monday, May 31, 2004

My decision making process didn't take long.    I went over and put a deposit on a 2005 Mercedes SLK.    I am 12th on the list so the timing should be perfect for me to get it in January when my lease is up on the G35.    I haven't decided on options and colors yet but I don't have to decide until around October.   Right now I am thinking Silver with Red leather.     Next comes my favorite part of getting a new car...waiting and reading about it.    I have collected a few locations to learn more about the SLK.

Monday, May 31, 2004 5:27:00 PM (Central Standard Time, UTC-06:00)
OK, I still haven't decided what car to get next but I am getting a little closer.    I have narrowed it down a bit.   I have decided to throw out the 350z in favor of the 2005 Mercedes SLK350.   Once I opened up the list, a few others slipped in.   If I get the SLK, I need to order soon to have it by January.   Here are my favorites so far.

2005 Mercedes SLK - This car is all new and MUCH improved over the previous versions.   They have added a larger engine with a 50hp power bump taking it to 268hp.  It also is much more attractive both inside and out.   It has the same folding hard top as before and as much trunk space as my G35.   Right now this is my favorite candidate.

2005 Audi S4 - Also a new design featuring a very potent 340hp V8.   Other advantages include 4 wheel drive making it a great all weather car and the ability to carry 4 people and a real trunk.    Plus, the Audi Navigation systems are really slick with a center mounted screen and a little information screen in front of the driver.   I may also consider the A4 version if I decide to save some money.

2005 Mercedes 320 CLK Convertible - Another new design with a much more high end feel compared to the other two.   I wouldn't do a car this expensive except the CLK has the highest residual of any car right now making lease rates pretty considering it is a 60k car.

That's the list.   Right now, I am torn between the first two mostly.  I need to decide in the next few weeks.   Later.

A nice day for shopping
Monday, February 23, 2004

Looks like Dish still has some work to do on the 921.   They did send out an update last week but so far, I still can't record CBS or ABC.   Also, they have stop sales of the 921 so if you are looking for one...it's probably EBAY or nothing.

It was a beautiful day in Oklahoma today so I decided to go check out some car lots (no sales people since it is sunday.)   I checked out the FX again as well as the new TL.    I am really struggling with what to upgrade to next.   I also brought the camera along and took a few pics.    You can see them here.

Oh, yeah, one other update.   It looks like Handspring has FINALLY released a T-Mobile version of the Treo 600.    If you want to get in on the upgrade price of only 399 then hurry up, I don't expect that they will do a upgrade deal again now that they are owned by PalmOne.

Now for something completely different
Monday, January 19, 2004

OK, enough of these delays, onto something fun.  My G35 is coming up on a year old so with one year left on the lease it is time to start deciding on a new car.  Of course finding a new car is one of my favorite hobbies.  So far, I am looking at three images/carspics.  Top of the list right now is the Nissan 350Z Roadster.  I am thinking Orange with the orange interior. Or maybe silver again.  I really miss my S2000 but just couldn't live that small of a car everyday.  My hope is that the Z will make a good everyday convertible.  My second choice right now is the Infiniti  FX45.  This thing has ALL the toys.  Rearview camera, Keyless Entry and Start, Laser Cruise control, V8 power and more.  The only problem is that it is kind of big.  Is it a sport-ute?  Since I really hate sport-utes, I am just going to call it a wagon.  My final choice right now is....another G35 Coupe.  I really like this car.  Any thoughts?

Oh, and I still don't have either a Treo or Dish 921.  Treo is "supposedly" shipping on the 17th.  The Dish 921 looks like it is another few weeks.

Time for some pics
Sunday, January 26, 2003

January 25, 2003 - Well, after that last batch of pictures, I decided I needed a new camera...1.3 mega pixel was just not going to cut it anymore.   So after researching the options, I got a new Canon S45.  It is a 4 mega pixel prosumer camera.  It will probably take while before I can take some really good pictures (so many settings), but so far they already look much better than my last camera did.  To test it out, I decided to take a drive and take some pictures at some locations around downtown Tulsa.

The results are to the left.  These have been reduced in resolution by 75 percent and they still look great.  You should see the originals.

If you want to see some originals, check out www.pbase.com/jakepratt.  I have some original pictures uploaded there.

Infiniti G35 Coupe
Sunday, January 12, 2003

I have been driving the new G all week and can definately say I like it more each time I drive it. Unfortunately, it is winter so good pictures are hard to come by. Hopefully we will get a nice mild day and I can give the car a good wax and take some pictures. For now I have to settle for driving a car that is as fun to drive as anything I have driven. It handles almost as well as the S2000 did and has LOADS more torque...and it isn't even broken in. I have a feeling that at the end of the 2 year lease, I may be leasing another one.

I am going to try out a new wax on this car. It is called Klasse All in One. This one is an Acrylic based wax. It will be interesting to compare it to the Polymer based Zaino and Silicon based FinishFirst, both of which are great as well. I will take some better pictures as soon as I wax it, but for now I posted a few pics of the car on my car page.

Later.

Love the G35
Friday, January 10, 2003

January 9, 2003 - Been driving the car for a few days now and can definitely say it is AWESOME. P1080002.jpg (530040 bytes)Unfortunately, it has been dark every time I have driven it so I haven't had a good chance to take some pictures or even get to look at it in the sun. Here is the best picture I have so far. To top it off, it is going to snow and be cold this weekend so I will probably only get to detail the interior. Oh, well, there will be lots of time to spend waxing and washing when summer gets here.

The G35 has landed
Sunday, January 05, 2003

January 4, 2003 - I got the call today that my Coupe is finally here. I will not pick it up until Monday but I couldn't wait so I went down to see it before it got unwrapped.

Here are some pics I took to get me by until then

It's really coming
Sunday, December 15, 2002

I got GREAT news today. My G35 Coupe is at the port. This means that it is likely less than 2 weeks before I get it. I can't wait to drive it.  In case you don't know what I am talking about, I am waiting on a Silver Infiniti G35 Coupe.

New Car Decision
Thursday, November 28, 2002

Nov 27, 2002 - Well, I guess I missed the S2000 too much.   The time has come to get a new car again.   This time, I am going to get the new Infiniti G35 Coupe.   The G35 is basically a 2+2 Nissan 350Z.    It has the same suspension, engine and much nicer interior.   Plus, I think it looks a lot nicer on the outside too.     I placed an order for a Silver/Graphite/Premium/AT5/Navi/Sport car at the end of October and hope to see it by Christmas.  Can't wait.

I have also made a decision.   NO MODS for this car.  While the CL needed a bit of work to handle well, the Infiniti comes exactly as I would want it.    Nice firm suspension, lots of power and rear wheel drive and perfect.  The only thing I might do is get winter tires/wheels.

New wheels, Aint they snazzy
Sunday, October 28, 2001

Oct 27, 2001 - Got my wheels in.   While I was installing them, I decided to paint the Brake Calipers and the Outside edge of the Rotors so they would not be all rusty looking.  Here are some pictures.

Wheels, Wheels, Wheels
Saturday, October 20, 2001

Oct 19, 2001 - Got the sways installed last week and WOW.  While I was at it I added a Neuspeed Strut bar to stiffen up the front a bit more.   The difference in the handing is like night and day.  While it is still no S2000, the handling is now quite good.   I will take some shots tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I also joined the Scratched Rims club today as well.  These darn wheels are attracted to curbs.

So, I had been planning on upgrading the wheels anyway so I am not too upset.  Now I just need to decide for sure what Wheels and Tires to order.  Here are some  I am considering.  Let me know what you think.

Special Edition Fox 5                    Moda R6

      BBS Moda R1           Monoco Tecnomagnesio

The Big Wheel Decision
Saturday, October 20, 2001

Oct 19, 2001 - Alright, I think I have decided on wheels.  I am going with the Moda R6 with Yokohama AVS Db's.  Here is a quick pick I whipped up of the wheels on the car.

Zaino Blue
Sunday, September 23, 2001

Sept 22, 2001 - After many MANY recommendations, I tried out Zaino Bros car polish.  This stuff is even better than the Finish First that I used on the Honda.  Here are some pics of the new car.

I have started to received a some of my accessories.  I got my Comptech sway bars in and also got the new DVD version 2.05.  It has an amazing amount of detail on Tulsa.   The sway bars will be installed Tuesday.  I will give an update after I get them installed.

The CL has arrived
Sunday, September 16, 2001

Sept 15, 2001- I finally picked up the car today.  Yahoo!!!   Checked out the Navigation System on the way back.  It is amazing how quiet the car is compared to my S2000.  I will start the mods next week.

Deciding on Wheels and a Build Date
Saturday, July 21, 2001

July 20, 2001 - I finally got the official date that my car will be built.  Aug 5-9.   I expect to take deliver 10 days after that.  I can't wait to see Aegean Blue in person. I have also decided that my first Mod will be Sway Bars and Wheels.  Right now I am looking at Moda R1.s

Gotta get some mods
Sunday, June 24, 2001

June 23 2001 - My Order for a 2001 Aegean Blue CL has been changed to a 2002.  Luckily, the dealer is still going to give me the same price as before.  Unfortunately, this means another month of wait for the new model to arrive.

In the meantime, I am giving some thought to some upgrades to do to the car to make it a little more like the sports car I am getting rid of.  So far, I am looking at  Comptech Headers, a KN Filter and Comptech Sway Bars.  I can get all of this for under 2k so I may do it when I get the car.  I am still undecided about springs.  I will need to see them in person before I decide.

Saturday, June 23, 2001 9:46:58 PM (Central Standard Time, UTC-06:00)
From S2000 to CL
Friday, June 22, 2001

June 21, 2001 - The quest to find a new car has finally ended   After switching back and forth between the BMW 330Ci and the Acura CL Type S I have finally decided on the CL.  Why?  Well because it is 10,000 cheaper and offers 95 % of the performance.  It has a much nicer interior and I don't have to deal with the horrible BMW service we have here.

Unfortunately, I have also decided to get rid of both of my images/carspics in the transition.   I may well get another S2000 in a couple of years but for now it just doesn't make sense to spend as much money as I do on a car that I can only drive half the year.   So in August, the S2000 will be no more and I will have a new car in its place in the garage.  I will miss it.

April 24, 2001 - Promised that I would post a picture of the new goodies.  Here is a shot of the floor mats.  You can also see the new leather console and titanium shift knob.  These accessories make such a huge difference on the interior without making it look added on.

2000 Miles in my S2000
Monday, March 13, 2000

March 12, 2000 - I couldn't wait any longer.  So even though it was cold today, I decided to get the car out of the garage and finish off the last 7 miles before the big 2000. Never again will I be able to say I own a 2000 S2000 with 2000 miles on it.  So I figured I had better take a picture.

The Big Photo Shoot

January 15, 2000 - The Big Photo Shoot.  A photographer friend of mine wanted to try out some black and white photographs.  While she was taking pictures, we tried to snap some shots on my Digital camera.  They turned out pretty well.  We did a number of motion pics, but I'll have to wait for her to develop the film to see them.   I can't wait to see the real pictures.

I also got in the new S2000 limited edition book from Honda.  It has some beautiful photography and cutaway drawings of the internal working of the engine and suspension.  It was a little pricey but if you have to have everything related to the S2000, it should be on your list.  It is available at

New Camera Fun
Monday, January 10, 2000

January 9, 2000 - Got a chance to try out my new Digital Camera.  The Olympus D-340R.  Seems to be a good camera for the money.  It was pretty cold and dismal looking, but could not think of a better subject to try out the camera with than this.

January 8, 2000 - I finally got a chance to install my new dead pedal.  It is by RM Racing.   Finally a dead pedal that matches the drilled aluminum pedals.  Here is a link to the RM Racing Web site.  They have a number of cool mods for the S2000.

January 1, 2000 - The new year arrived and it appears that nothing has exploded/quit working  and the world seems much like it was yesterday.  Here is Oklahoma, we sometimes get a little spring in December.  It appears  that mother nature decided to make the first day of the new year absolutely beautiful.

So, it's finally time to give the new car it's first wash and wax.  I washed and waxed with products from Meguiars.  I thought the car looked good before.  Now it is amazing.  I also tried out a product called Plexus.  It does an amazing job of keeping those plastic back windows clear.  I purchased them at a online shop called Autopia Car Care.  Here is a link.

Speakers
Saturday, December 25, 1999

December 24, 1999 - First MOD.   I finally got around to installing my new speakers.  The difference in sound is amazing.  While it is still not what I would like, it is much better than stock and required no cutting of the car.   With the factory manual and a good door panel pulling tool, the install was around 15 minutes per side.  The only mod necessary was to cut the factory plug and add a standard spade connector.   Also it is a very tight fit (had to use a little pressure to get all of the clips to line up).

Here are some links to the speakers and the pages from the factory manual that were useful

December 20, 1999 - I made my first attempt at a winamp skin    It is modeled after the digital dashboard in the S2000.  After a few people let me know what they think, I will probably submit it to Winamp.com.

In case you don't have winamp, you can get it here.
