I don't remember another gadget that has come along and been so hyped, so sought after and so amazingly impressive all at the same time.   I know there are lots of reviews in the blogosphere by now so I will not go into every little detail about this snazzy new phone but I thought I would put down a few of the things that really struck a chord with me and a few of the things that I think may drive me nuts.

First up...the AWESOME....

The User Interface -  If ever a GUI was lickable..this is it.   This user interface isn't just impressive.   It is miraculous.   Apple has managed to put together a UI that slides, oozes and spins better than anything I have seen before.  I have not seen a single pause or stutter on the iPhone in 24 hours of use.      This would be impressive animation if I could get my 2.2ghz PC to accomplish it (which it often can't) but on of a phone its nothing short of amazing.   I understand completely now why Apple is so cautious of allowing 3rd party development to take place yet.   Just a single slip up from a developer and this super slick seamless user interface could be reduced to a pausing mess  Don't believe me...boot up Windows XP and watch Windows try to draw a menu with Firefox or Visual Studio consuming it's clock cycles and tell me that Apple isn't doing the right thing to preserve the magic.

The Hardware - As always with Apple hardware, I tend to spend the first few days just staring at it wondering how the heck they fit all that hardware in such a tiny package.    I placed it on the table next to my sisters T-Mobile Dash and it made the touchscreenless Dash look almost portly.   The devices feels very solid and well put together and the lack of buttons keeps it looking very simple and sexy.     The hardware is completely dominated by its beautiful glass screen.    Apple has again proven my theory plausible.    I am firmly convinced that Apple goes out of their way to design consumer devices that customers has to touch and rub.   They seem to have figured out the same thing that car companies know.  The more you touch and pamper and polish the more you fall in love with the device.     Well, this device definitely follows the pattern started by the shiny backed iPod and the matt black Macbook.    Like both of those devices, you will be rubbing this thing with a clean cloth ever every few hours to keep screen nice and clean.   It's no worry, and each caress endears the device to you more and more.

Coverflow - If you are like me and very visual, this THE way to look at information.       I love Coverflow in iTunes and I love it even more when it's your finger dancing over a screen to find a particular CD.   It's very intuitive and very impressive to watch.   I can't wait to see it in Leopard either.

What's not to love....surprisingly, there are relatively few little quibbles I have with this device.    Most are things that only I am annoyed.

Where is my LED - Apple, can't you give us just ONE led?    A simple LED to tell us we have a message waiting or missed call would save us a LOT of on/off cycles?   A single LED to tell us when the things is charging?   Maybe you could do one of those snazzy invisible LED's like you did on the new Macbook Pro's.

Let me control the font size - I am no longer a youngster with great eyesight (  well technically I had bad eyesight when I was a youngster) so I would love a way to set a larger font.   Sure, I can do the little pinch/squeeze to solve the problem but I don't want to do it on every email or web page.   Seems like an obvious accessibility change so let's get it in a firmware fix.

Exchange Push - OK, this is definitely just a hope of mine, but I have really grown accustomed to having my email and events pushed to my phone.    The good news is that they have decent Exchange integration built in and it seems to be pushing emails to my phone pretty quickly but without event pushing, I am left with dropping it in a cradle to get my next appointment.

More Space - 8gb is not bad but i was really hoping for a storage bump before release.    I think with 16gb, the device would be just about right.     That way I could put most of my Music on there with room to spare for lot's of pictures ad a few movies to boot.

eBooks - I read eBooks a LOT.    So far, I haven't come up with a plan on how I will be able to read eBooks on this device.  For me, this is a pretty important feature and one the iPhone seems poised to solve...I am just missing the software.   Come on Apple, lets get on it.  I need my eBook fix or I will have to find an alternative device to solve my eBook reading addiction.   Heck, just a dedicated Word Processor/PDF Reader would suffice.

That's all I have come  with so far.   Its too early to tell for sure but for me, I think it's a winner.   Considering it's a version 1.0 product and almost everything I have any issues with is software related, I am hopeful we will get some firmware surprises over the next few months.

The MacBook is calling me
Sunday, January 15, 2006

The more I learn about it the more I am loving this new MacBook Pro.  OMacBook copy.gifK, we don't know if it can run windows yet but I am sure it will be able to run it in emulation so I am seriously considering grabbing this thing.     Big question is whether I can live with the single mouse button.   So far everyone thinks this is a silly reason not to get it.   Alene is even assuming I will order it before february.    She of course want me to figre out this intel mac thing so she can get the 13.3 when it comes out.

For now, I will wait for comfirmation on booting XP on it or at least running it in a Virtual PC but I am thinking that if it will handle windows at all, I may go ahead and grab it.

For now, my weekend chores are done so I am off to spend some quality time with Call of Duty.

blah blah blah MacBook Pro blah blah....
Wednesday, January 11, 2006

OK, other than the MacBook, the Keynote was pretty weak.    I was really hoping for either an iBook or a Mac Mini.  Either of which I would buy in a second.  In fact, I was thinking of buying the new MacBook until I noticed....

It still has a single mouse button!!!   This is crazy.  Doesn't Apple understand the difference between a PC buyer buying this thing and a DELL is a single mouse button.   I was all ready to plunk down 2k when I realized they had not fixed this simple flaw.   Oh well, sorry Steve.   Me and many others will spend the cash on your beautiful laptops without Intel Chips but only when they have two buttons.

For now my credit card is back safe in my pocket where it belongs.

XBOX Day is Coming.
Saturday, October 29, 2005

Well, now that the XBox 360 is soon going to be a reality, I figured I would rebuild my computer with Windows Media Center so I can really take advantage of the XBOX Media Center Extender.  This will allow a 360 to see the content on a Media Center PC over your home network.  I have to admit that I haven't looked at Home Theater PC's in a few years and boy have they changed.   Media Center 2005 is a really slick piece of software.    It is designed to be accessed from your couch using a remote control or from your desk using a mouse.  It can record tv like a tv, view pictures and play music.   For me, I plan to use it to watch the latest in internet tv programs like Digg, CommandN and TWIT and of course, some random shows I "borrow" from friends via BitTorrent ;)    I was able to rip my favorite DVD's and they play just fine from a simple folder on my network.     I have now completely flip-flopped.   Media PC's are AWESOME.   Now, I just need to find a good dual tuner HDTV card to drop in my ole Shuttle XPC so I can really make this baby shine.   If you haven't seen it before, I have a screen shot on the left.

PS - Go signup for your XBOX Gamer Card on www.XBOX.com so you are all set for XBOX Launch day next month.   You can see mine at the right.   Later.

Nano Nano
Saturday, October 08, 2005

After waiting a few extra weeks to get a good deal from Amazon, I finally got my nano. If you haven't held a iPod nono yet, you need to. It's much smaller than you can possibly imagine I can't imagine how they fit the parts in there. It's almost too small. You really can't grasp it, you have to kind of place it on your hand for it to be usable. It's screen is crisp and just on the verge of too small but with bright colors and contrast. I got the black 4GB version that is in so much demand and it was worth the wait. I have pulled out out of my shirt pocket twice and both times, it has gather comments from complete strangers.

In preparation for moving the home theater, I have finally decided on a new Home Theater Receiver. My old Sony STR-444ES is getting positively old and can't do most of the now common audio standards (DolbyProLogic II, DTS ES etc) so I figured I would go ahead and get a receiver that can handle not only the latest HDMI video but also do a decent job of handling multiple rooms. I decided on the Denon AVR-4306. It has 3 inputs and one outut for HDMI , upconversion of all analog inputs to HDMI. It has 130 watts by 7 channels which is plenty for me (I am not an audiophile thiese days). Also, it has a snazzy iPod port on the front and ethernet on the back. As with most things I order this one isn't quite out yet but should be available in a few weeks.

BTW - If anyone is interested, I am selling my Canon 20D so I can downgrade to the lighter weight Rebel XT. It's in great condition with a perfect sensor (no bad spots) but does have one stuck green pixel on the lcd. It was there when I got it but since my goal was to get a good image sensor (these CMOS censors are notorious for bad sections) I kept it. The green pixel does not have any effect the image quality and it's stiill under warrenty so I guess I could get it fixed but it's such a tiny problem that I haven't gone to the trouble. Shoot me an email if you are insterested or have a reasonsable offer.

Car problems....Again.
Friday, March 25, 2005

After thinking the car was finally fixed....the light came on again. GRRR!!! Back to the shop again. I am getting a little tired of taking the car in to have it taken apart and put together unfixed. Unforunately, I leased it so I don't have the same ability to simply return it as a "lemon", but there may be other options. Still love the car though. Just with it was fixed.

Got the VAIO and got it all configured to my liking. This is one cool laptop. It has with out a doubt the nicest LCD screen I have ever seen anywhere. That includes my 23 inch monitor that sits on my desk. It is almost too bright and crisp. I can't run it on it's highest brightness unless I am outside.

Battery life is so so. I can get around 2 hours while surfing the web on the couch but no more. It may get better as time goes on but we will see.

Long time no blog...
Saturday, March 12, 2005

Sorry, long time, no blog.   I had a very buzy few months.   I have been working on a new website for a business in town and between that, my real job, my PAD project and everything else, it's taking most of my time.   Lots up updates though.   So far, the SLK is great...except one small problem.   It has to go in to the shop every couple weeks.   This nagging "check engine" light keeps coming on and they dealer has had trouble trying to figure it out.   Hopefully they got it sorted out now so I can just enjoy the car.  I have taken a small pile of pics since I got the car which you can see here.   http://www.pbase.com/jakepratt/car_photos   It's really a love/hate relationship right now, but once the weather is nicer and the bugs are all worked out, I expect that will all change.

My PAD project is continuing.   I am in the final stretch of the project (9 months so far) and will probably stop at the end of a year.   I am thinking of doing a picture a week and focusing more on the quality of the ideas and technique which gets lost in the shuffle taking a picture a day.

I have a few new gadgets that I purchased lately.

First off, I upgraded my Treo to the new Treo 650.   It's a big step forward and a big step backward.   It's got bluetooth, a high resolution screen and a removable battery.   These features are great...unfortunately, they come with a few problems.   Specifically, Palm decided to try out a new file system that is nothing but trouble.   The thing is very picky about software  Lots of software can simply crash it so it resets at least once every few days.   Hopefully firmware upgrades will fix that up.    If anyone is interested in my old Treo 600 (almost perfect condition) let me know.

I also grabbed a new iPod Shuffle.   It's awesome.  It weighs nothing.  I use it so much, I may just give up on my main iPod.    Since my SLK plays MP3 natively, there really isn't a need for it anymore.

Finally, I am replacing my laptop.  For the first time, I am going to try a Sony VAIO.   I really want an Apple, but being a programmer, that's not going to work.   I figure the Sony is the closest thing you can get on the PC side.   It is a custom Sony FS-500.    I will try to post on how I like it when it comes in.

Well, that's about all that's going on.    I think it's time for a drive.  I will try to update more often if I can.

Apple get's me again.
Sunday, October 31, 2004

Every time Apple comes out with a new toy, I have to resist ordering it.....sometimes I don't.   This time I couldn't resist the new iPod Photo.   The color screen and support for photo's did me in.    Now I can carry around not only my entire collection of music but my PAD Photo's too.   Plus I finally get some payoff for making sure that I embedded album art in ALL of my MP3's over the years because the iPod Photo can display that as well.

Looks like Palm finally announced the Treo 650.   Its a nifty device but unfortunately I can't get one until next year since it looks like it will be Sprint only for quite a while.

Oh yeah, I am also building my new computer...I still have to hammer down a few components like a new monitor (Apple 23 vs Sony 23) but I will post an update when I decide for sure.

HD Tivo Rocks
Wednesday, May 26, 2004

I got my new HD Tivo installed last week and I have been living with it for a week now. It is so different from teh Dish 921 it isn't even funny. So far it has been rock solid. No crashes, no suprises...it just works. The feature set is pretty much just like you get with a normal Tivo just with HD recording capability. I do have a couple of nits to pick however.

1. It doesn't support sending native resolution to my Samsung. This way I could let the Sammy take care of the up/down conversion.

2. I think the picture quality isn't quite as sharp as my previous HD receivers. Actually, it may be, but I need to tweak the TV some.

3. The DirecTV style guide is SLOW. Not just slightly slow. We are talking watch the screen paint slow. Luckily the Tivo (List) guide performs decently so I am living with it.

I can't wait to see how this things evolves over time. I really hope that it gets the HMO soon. It could become the ultimate media center for a home theater. So far, I am in love. I definately recommend it to anyone with an HD capable TV as the ultimate tool to get the most out of your gear.

BTW - i also got a SD Directivo at the same time for only 80 bucks so as soon as the Tulsa locals are up Dish Network will be evicted from my house. I can't wait.

New Site...now with .NET
Sunday, May 02, 2004

New Site - I have been working on it for a while but I have finally finished.   I have completed moving the entire site to ASP.NET.    After re-writing DevBuddy using C#, I was really curious how well the language would work for a website.   I can now say, it works great.  The new site has only a quarter of the code the old site had and is much easier to maintain.     Hope you like it too.   I will  be tweaking the look for the next few weeks but overall it is complete.  Feel free to shoot me any comments you have.

Goodbye 921, Hello HDTivo - After a lot of trouble with the software that powers the 921, I finally decided to sell it.     It is now gone.   Now I am in search of an HD Tivo.   I will be switching to DirectTV as soon as I find one.    As usual I will let you know how I like it.

Goodbye Bravo, Hello Momitsu - Another trouble spot in my home theater was the Bravo D1.   I have replaced it with a Momitsu 880.   It is so much better.  It has been rock solid, delivers the same or better picture quality that the Bravo did and hasn't eaten one disk.   I did get a replacement Bravo from vinc.com.  They claim the new version fixes the problems but it was too late.   If anyone wants the Bravo, make me an offer.

Dish 921 is a mixed bag.
Tuesday, February 03, 2004

I finally received it.    The Dish Network 921 exists.    Here is my overview of this new toy.

If you don't know anything about this technology, here is the basics.   The dish 921 is a Satellite DVR (digital video recorder) with 2 Satellite tuners.  This means that  you can be watching one show while recording another.   Plus like other DVRs, you can also pause and rewind live TV.    It does all of this magic by constantly recording the bits coming from the satellite to an internal Hard Drive.   Think of it as a satellite tuner with a built in VCR on crack.    When it works well, it adds up to a TV watching experience that once experienced is hard to live without.    That is where most DVR's stop (or as TiVo calls them PVR's)    The 921 ups the ante for Satellite DVR's by adding the ability record HDTV not only from the Satellite (if you have the HD package) but also over the air from an antenna.     This means that I can finally pause and digitally record ALL of my TV, not just the SD stuff..   As I said, once you have the ability to pause live tv...it's hard to live without.       As if that wasn't enough, this satellite tuner lets you output via DVI which means it is a great complement to a DLP or LCD tv.

However,  there is just one problem.    This is a receiver made by Dish Network.      This means that the receiver is only half done and pretty unstable.     Let me give you a couple of examples.   First of all, it does show the OTA channels in the guide but...it doesn't show any information about what is on those channels.    Second, it seems to just spontaneously crash on me every once in a while.     Finally, while it can pause and record HDTV Over the Air channels... it can only do this magic on SOME channels.     Little did I know this problem until I tried to rewind the Super Bowl to see a particular section (wink wink).    The receiver just looked at me like I was an idiot.     It turns out that it can only record basic shows on channels that don't have sub channels.   Well, hopefully it will get worked out soon.

It's not all bad.   When using the satellite tuner, everything works VERY well.   I have recorded a number of shows on Discovery HD Theater and the picture is amazing.   Being able to record one channel while watching another is a great feature.

Well, so far the experience is very mixed.   On the one hand, it does things no receiver can do.   On the other, it doesn't do anything reliably.    I have decided to live with it for the next couple of months.     I will keep you up to date as new versions are released.   If it doesn't improve by then... it's HDTV TiVo time.

Just some updates
Friday, January 23, 2004

Well, I had a bit of trouble with the new Rebel. I kept getting bad pixels. Needless to say that wasn't going to work. Well, after returning and getting a replacement 2 times, I finally have one that takes a pretty clean picture.  If you don't know what bad pixels are.... don't find out.  I began noticing mine after about 20-30 shots.  Each of them had a small purple dot.  After that I used a program called DeadPixelTest to identify the pixels..  This handy utility identifies bad pixels by looking at images for either dead or hot (bright) pixels.

In all of the trouble, I did manage to take some shots. I have uploaded them here. I would love to hear your comments.

A couple of other updates.  The Dish 921 is finally shipping and I expect to get mine in a week or two. I will give an update when it arrives.  Of course, in traditional Dish Network fashion, they are a bit late to the game.  The HD Tivo looks like it will be here in March.  I expect the 921 will only be on my equipment rack for a little while.  At that time, I will probably switch to Directv and get the TiVo.

Back to work :(
Friday, January 02, 2004

Well, I had a great Christmas and gave and received lots of great gifts. One item that no one could afford to get me, I decided to buy for myself.  It is the Canon Digital Rebel camera.    I have really been enjoying photography more and more and finally decided to get a true high end camera that didn't require me to compromise when taking pictures.    The camera is amazing.     Being basically a point and shoot camera owner in the past, this camera really helps you to get started using a higher end camera.   It has all of the automatic modes that I have always used on camera's such as Portrait, Landscape etc. This makes it work very much like a point and shoot camera.   However, it also has full manual modes for Aperture, Shutter and of course Focus.     This was the thing I was always missing in other camera's.  Trying to get the right depth of field and focus using a 1.5 inch LCD just never worked for me.      I haven't had a change to take many pictures yet but here are a couple to give you and idea what they look like.....now I just need some talent to go with the equipment

You can click on them here.     Beware, these are LARGE pictures.

What I want for Christmas
Tuesday, December 02, 2003

OK, so I know you are all thinking....what can I get Jake for Christmas. Well let me help you out. I want a lot of stuff, but if you all get together, you can get me this.  It is the Canon EOS Digital Rebel.  It is the first under 1000 dollar digital SLR camera and it is the latest on my lust list.  I really want this camera. It is the only thing between me and the greatest pictures ever seen.  Well, this camera and some talent :)

Also, I have been thinking of upgrading my audio equipment pretty soon.  Currently I have a few year old Sony ES receiver driving  I was thinking of a new receiver but I kind of miss the separates I used to drive my NHT's with.  I did some research and came across the Outlaw Audio website.  They have a really good Preamp/Amp combo on sale right now for around $1600.  Reviews that I have found are all very positive, and I will be able to pick up some of the new audio standards that I am missing right now (ProLogic II, DTS-ES, etc)

Love the new Treo
Wednesday, November 26, 2003

I have finally spent enough quality time with the Treo 600 to pass judgement.     It is AWESOME.    I really had some worries about the screen size but have to say that the screen is pretty decent.   It is smaller than the previous version (Treo 270) but clarity is great and the brightness makes up for the size.    Unfortunately it is only 11.5 bit so pictures don't look great and it only does 160x160 so it isn't as crisp as it could be but overall it is a big improvement from the previous version.    Overall, this device is a keeper.   I don't see myself getting rid of it until a better Treo comes out.   Nothing else comes close to delivering this combination of features in a package you can actually put in your pocket every day (sorry a pocketpc phone doesn't fit in a normal persons pocket..

What I love

  • The Form factor is perfect.   It feels great as a phone or as a PDA.   Everyone I have shown it too wants one.   I think I have already sold 5 of them...I should get a commission.
  • The stylus free life.   I never realized how much I didn't like using a stylus until I used this device.  You RARELY have to take out the stylus.  With my 270 I became an expert at holding the stylus between two fingers while typing with the thumbs.   It was downright clumsy compared to the 600.
  • OS5 - Finally I can run all of the latest software.  The 270 used Palm OS3.5!!!
  • Battery life is amazing.   I have yet to see it dip below 85 percent.
  • Camera - I had no idea how much I would use the camera.   I keep snapping pictures everywhere.
  • External Storage -  Finally I can backup my device and store all of my ebooks on one card.   SD cards are up to 512mb so I can fit a LOT of data on there.

What needs to improve

  • The screen is really good but needs higher resolution and a higher bit depth.   I still can't use this as a decent photo viewer and my ebooks are not as crisp as I would like.
  • I miss TreoMail.   It was the best mail software for the Treo and is now gone.  I am stuck with Visto which isn't quite as polished.   Maybe someday Snappermail will add IMAP support and this problem will go away.
  • It doesn't come with a cradle.   Luckily one is available for 30 bucks more but should come in the box.
  • Non-standard headsets and headphones.    They should have put a standard headset jack on it.
  • Camera is lacking.   It needs a bit better performance in low light.

Two days old and already I'm modding.
Tuesday, November 25, 2003

Hi all,   I FINALLY got a hold of a Treo .    While it still hasn't been released for T-Mobile (my carrier) it has been released for Cingular and the Cingular version is unlocked which means it will work with any GSM Service.   I have been playing around with it for a couple of days and it is pretty impressive, but I will save that for later.   Unfortunately there was one flaw in this plan.   While there are no Cingular logo's on the phone there is one logo in the software.    Each time you  connect or disconnect you see the big Cingular Splash.   No big deal but, still I figured I could get rid of it.    Sure enough, I figured out how.

Here is what I did to hack my phone originally.

 - Filez  - This allows you to see the files in the ROM and copy them down to your hard drive.
 - SD Card - This is so you can easily transfer the file from your palm to your computer.
 - PRCEdit Version 1.0 Beta - Allows editing PRC Files.

Here is what I did (this is for information purposes, you can skip to the next section if you just want to update your logo).

  • Using Filez, copy the file Phone_CNGW from the ROM (little memory icon) to your SD Card.   To show ROM files check the checkbox at the bottom right of the screen.  For other carriers the file name is probably different.
  • Put the SD Card in your PC and open the file Phone_CNGW using PRCEdit.    You should see a pictures that looks like the picture at the right.
  • Next Delete the TWO bitmap files in this PRC.   The correct bitmaps to delete are shown in the pictures.   Unfortunately, you can't seem to edit these bitmaps to change the logo.    I am sure someone with more expertise can figure out how to edit instead of just deleting them.
  • Uncheck ReadOnly and Save the file using PRCEdit.
  • Hotsync the file to your Palm (if you didn't uncheck read only earlier this will fail).

That's it.   When you connect and disconnect you will see a nice simple Handspring Logo.   I am still working on replacing the actual logo instead of just reverting to Handspring.  I will let you know if I figure it out.

The easy way to replace the logo.  After a bit of trial and error this is the simplest way to replace the logo.

  • Open my modified PRC file using PRCEdit.  Here is a link to the file.  This file is for originally for Cingular but will work on any phone.   If you use the file in the firmware (as I did originally) it will crash PRCEdit.  Here is a link to PRCEdit.
  • Create your "connecting" graphic  and "disconnecting" graphics using any graphic editor you wish.  It should be sized to 160x160 pixels.
  • Select your connecting graphic and copy it to the clipboard.
  • Double Click on the bitmap labeled 6851 and select the edit button below the 16 bit bitmap.  You will see the current bitmap.
  • Paste your graphic into the box opened in the last step.
  • Close the graphic editor and close the bitmap resource editor.
  • Select your disconnecting graphic and copy it to the clipboard.
  • Double Click on the bitmap labeled 6861 and select the edit button below the 16 bit bitmap.  You will see the current bitmap.
  • Paste your graphic into the box opened in the last step.
  • Close the graphic editor and close the bitmap resource editor.
  • Save the PRC and close.
  • Hotsync the file as you did in the above instructions and you are good to go.

If you don't want to hack your own file and just want to use mine,  you can simply do the following.  This will replace your carrier logo with the standard Unlocked logo.

  • Hotsync the Phone_Logo file (Here is a link) to your phone.
  • That's it.

There are a number of people starting to post logo's on teh web.   Here are a couple.

  • BCaslis has a number of logos already prepared here
  • Treo600Essentials has also started a group just for logos.

This worked for me and should be safe (as long as you don't try to burn the file back to the ROM but I take no responsibility for any problems you have with your phone.

Toys Coming Finally
Sunday, November 23, 2003

It occured to me that one of my favorite gadgets is one that I use once a week and have never even mentioned on my site.  The Roomba Robot vacuum cleaner.  This little device is a robot that will actually do your house cleaning for you.  I have one and LOVE it.  The way it works is you section sections of you house off by closing doors and using virtual walls (included with the Roomba).  The Roomba then does this little random pattern of vacuuming the room until the whole room is clean.  It goes an hour so on a charge which for me is just about right to do the whole house in 3 large sections.font>

Also, a couple of the gadgets I have been waiting for months for are finally coming soon.  First is the Treo 600.  This is the replacement for the Treo 300 I carry now.  It adds a camera, Palm OS5 and a much better design.  The second is the Dish 921.  Rumors seem to indicate that it is coming in about 3-4 weeks.  I will update everyone when I get these two exciting toys.

Delays AGAIN
Thursday, November 06, 2003

It seems the delays will never end. First the 921 was delayed yet again (only two weeks this time) and now the Treo is delayed AGAIN. This time the darn thing was scheduled to ship on the 3rd and then go delayed to late November. How the heck can you not know you are going to ship something until the day it is scheduled. Come on...these things have to be sitting in a box somewhere. Grrrr.

At least my Samsung DLP is finally upgraded. They came and installed the board last week so I finally have discrete codes. Now to get my Pronto Pro tweaked out again.

Product Delays Suck
Sunday, October 12, 2003

Those punks at T-Mobile have delayed the Treo600 until November 24. Luckily, it appears that the Unlocked GSM Treo 600 will be available next week so we are am not out of luck. Also, if you have Dish Network, tune into channel 101 on Oct 13 because I think they are finally going to show the Dish 921 HDTV DVR. Hopefully they will say when I can finally get mine!

New Treo next week.
Sunday, October 05, 2003

The new Treo 600 will finally be released next week so I  have placed my preorder one as soon as they ship.  The Treo 600 is the next generation of the Handspring Treo.  This is a convergence device that combines a phone and palm pda into one package.  It enables you to do many things that are not easy to do two devices such as checking email and surfing the web.  Having carried a Treo 300 for the last year...I can't go back to two devices ever again.

After being very disappointed with sprint, I am switching to T-Mobile.  Also, I have decided this time to get an unlocked non-carrier specific model.  This means that I can carry it to another GSM provider if I decide I don't like T-Mobile (not likely).  Also, it means it will not have a logo for a specific carrier on the phone which adds a bit of uniqueness to the phone.  Since I am now going to have a camera where ever I go...I also have setup a new MoBlog.  What...you don't know what a Moblog is.  It is a way for people with camera phones to log their daily life using pictures.  It makes it easy to email a picture from your phone and have it instantly show up on the web.  My MoBlob will be at jakepratt.textamerica.com when I get it all setup.

The TV Upgrade
Monday, July 28, 2003

The new TV is Awesome.  I finally got my Samsung DLP TV and have been playing with it for a few weeks.  This TV is really cool. The first thing you notice about it is how shallow it is.  It is only 18 inches deep.  I had a bit of trouble deciding on the best stand for it (it is a table top model) but finally decided on the Samsung stand that is designed to go with the TV and am very happy.

Besides the stand problems, I did have a few problems with the upgrade.  First my HD receiver just decided to stop working.  Luckily, I love it when things break because I get to upgrade so I went out and bought a Samsung SIR-t165.  This is an Over the AIR HDTV tuner that can also tune analog channels.  It also has the ability to output its signal via Component, DVI or RGB making it very versatile.  This should hold me over until the Dish 921 comes out (who knows when.)  The second problem I had was that my DVD Player didn't fit under the Samsung stand.  Well, once again, it decided to upgrade the DVD Player.  Since this TV is digital, I decided to go with one of the latest generation DVD players that can output digital via a DVI connection.  I went with a little known player from a company called "V"  They make the Bravo D1 DVI DVD player.  Watching DVD in full digital is AMAZING.  All of the noise you normally see with dvd is gone.  All you see is a pixel perfect reproduction of the bits on the DVD. The final problem is that the TV didn't come with the latest firmware which has discrete codes (allowing me to switch inputs via my pronto) so I am waiting for Samsung to upgrade it.

I need a new TV
Tuesday, July 15, 2003

So, I am looking at a new TV.  Why you ask...well I don't know.  Actually the opportunity to sell my TV came along and so I am thinking it would be nice to upgrade to something much BIGGER.  Since I am upgrading, I figured it would be nice to upgrade technology.  I have pretty much decided to go with the Samsung HLN617W.  This TV is based on a DLP chip.

A DLP based TV is a fully digital tv which means that the image isn't sent to an Analog CRT to produce the image.  Instead it is sent to a digital device called a Digital Mirror Device.  This DMD has tiny mirrors that turn on and off very quickly to lighten or darken the pixels. The light which bounces off of the mirrors is then timed with a color wheel which produces the color on the screen.  This technology eliminates the convergence issues associated with CRT based TV's and produces a pixel perfect image.

It does have a couple of disadvantages such as, it doesn't produce black as well as a CRT and some people can see rainbows when they look at the screen (because of the color wheel) but to me it looks GREAT with pixel perfect images with no geometry issues or curved lines (granted my CRT is really good after being calibrated)  I will probably order it in the next few weeks.

New Member of the Family
Saturday, June 07, 2003

I am sharing my home with a new friend. His name is Tricky and he is a Robot!!!   He is a Sony Aibo Entertainment Robot.  Aibo is a small robot that looks kind of like a small dog.   He uses artificial intelligence to create a really interesting personality that is capable of learning tricks, simulating emotions and interacting with humans.

I know it sounds strange but he is very lifelike.  In order to do all of this, you run software to give him his personality.   I am running Aibo Life 2 which is an interesting piece of software which allows him to "grow" from baby (can't even walk( to an adult.   In between he will go through around 8 different personality stages including child and adolescence.    His is also completely autonomous and will sit and play with his ball when you arent' playing with him.  And like a real dog, he likes to be pet (he has touch sensors in various places on his body.    You can click on the picture on the left to see a picture of him posing for the camera.

New DishNetwork 921
Sunday, May 04, 2003

I almost forgot to mention the other new gadget I ordered recently.  It is the Dish Network 921 PVR.  It is the Ultimate Personal Video Recorder.  If you have never heard of a PVR, where have you been.  Basically it lets you record and pause live TV as well as record shows while you are out.  If you have seen a Tivo, you have seen a PVR.

This is the latest and greatest PVR made (well when they start making it). It has a number of features that are completely new to PVR's.  It has the ability to Record 80 Hours of standard definition TV but more importantly it can record 40 hours of HD TV.  In addition to recording HD, what makes this box special is how many boxes it can completely replace.  For me, it will replace my Satellite Receiver, PVR, and HDTV Tuner and seamlessly integrate them into one simple to use interface.  Unfortunately, since I pre-ordered this, it may be a couple of months before it actually ships, but hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Treo
Saturday, November 30, 2002

The Treo 300 - Everyone knows I love Palm Handhelds.   Well, following in a long line of Palms is the Treo 300.   I have owned a lot of Palms including a Palm 1000, Personal, Professional, V, Vx, Vx Special Edition, M505, M515, and a Sony Clie NR70.   I loved them all BUT this one is my favorite yet.   Why....wireless data.    Now that Sprint has all the data you want for 10 bucks, I had to grab this device.     Having a phone, palm and wireless internet in your pocket is awesome.

Apple iPod
Sunday, April 28, 2002

Nov 29, 2002 - To get this page going, I decided I would list a few of my favorite Gadgets.    Items I used everyday and really enjoy.

The Apple IPod - I take a lot of heat at work for using this item.    Every time I listen to it I hear things like "Mac Lover" or "Why don't you listen to your music on your PC"    All I can say, is that the IPod is more convenient and sounds better.    What, you don't know what an IPod is.      Basically it is a very small hard drive based MP3 Player.   It comes in 5,10 and 20 GB models which give you enough storage to have your whole CD collection in your pocket.  Plus since it is made by apple it is stylish and easy to use.

Powerbook Titanium
Saturday, January 01, 2000

Apple Powerbook Titanium - Well, you have seen the switch ads and you can count me among them.   I now use a PowerBook titanium and a PowerMac G4 Cube.  Both are running the awesome Apple MacOS 10.2 Jaguar.  If you haven't used a mac in a while, you owe it a look.  This ain't your teachers Mac.   This New OS is based on UNIX and is both robust and gorgeous.

Shuttle XPC
Saturday, January 01, 2000

Jan 14, 2003
- Got my newest pc built and running finally.   This is the smallest and coolest PC I have ever built.   It is based on the Shuttle XPC aluminum case.   You can see a picture of it on the right.   It looks awesome with my automobile stuff.   This tiny case packs some nice features including front and back USB 2.0, Firewire, and SPDIF Audio as well as a liquid cooling system for the CPU.   It measures a itty bitty 7.5x7.5x11 inches.     Plus look how well it goes with my S2000 model and the cool Yamaha CDR my non-techy parents got me last year for christmas.

It was so small in fact that I was able to get rid of my old favorite computer...my Apple Cube.
